Chestnut festival in Codera: on foot to the roadless village of Valchiavenna, through the Cii chestnut groves
Codera: the chestnut festival
A stone village no road has ever reached, a stepped mule track carved into the rock and a village festival with chestnuts and marronita: at the end of October Codera celebrates its chestnut tree.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Mezzolpiano, above Novate Mezzola, and climb the historic Val Codera mule track, step by step, with Lake Mezzola growing smaller below us. We pass Avedée and the Cii chestnut groves, and reach Codera for the Chestnut Festival: a small market, chestnut sweets, freshly made marronita and lunch at the osteria or a packed lunch. In the afternoon we walk down the same way.
No road has ever reached Codera: everything, from groceries to gas cylinders, has always come up these steps on foot, and the village is still alive.
Anyone who walks regularly: the mule track climbs steadily with many steps, but it is wide and safe.
Come to the Chestnut Festival with the Guidders: a roadless village celebrating for a day.
Novate Mezzola is about an hour and three quarters from Milan: SS36 to Colico and then towards Chiavenna as far as Novate; the Val Codera car park is at Mezzolpiano. By train, the Milan–Chiavenna line stops at Novate Mezzola. Car pooling in the outing's Telegram group.
