Golden larches, a timeless village and a lake with a magic name

A hike into the enchantment of Alpe Devero, where autumn colours turn every slope red, gold and copper and the woods become a living painting. We are inside the Veglia-Devero Nature Park, one of the best-preserved alpine settings in Piedmont.

The experience

From the Devero car park we reach the picturesque village of Crampiolo, a timeless place of stone houses and silence, where in autumn all you hear is the wind in the larches. We continue to the Lago delle Streghe, the Witches' Lake, set among golden larches and clear reflections: the name comes from the tales shepherds told about these waters.

It is 11 kilometres with barely 350 metres of ascent: a route suited to everyone, which takes all the time it needs for looking. Lunch at the hut in Crampiolo.

This is an intermediate hike for its length only: 11 kilometres with minimal height gain, on comfortable, well-marked trails. Suitable for families and beginners. Bring walking shoes, water and a jacket: at altitude in autumn the temperature drops quickly.

Meeting at the Devero car park
We meet the Guidders at the car park at the end of the road, at the entrance to the magical Devero plain, above Baceno (VB). From here we walk towards Crampiolo. The exact time is shared in the outing's Telegram group.

13:00MOUNTAIN HUT
Crampiolo and the Witches' Lake
We reach the village of Crampiolo, stone houses and silence, and continue to the Witches' Lake set among golden larches. We stop for lunch at the hut, with autumn colours all around.

15:00RETURN
Back past the Locanda del Devero
We head back to the cars past the Locanda del Devero, the plain opening in front of us and the larches lit by afternoon light. We take the time for a toast before saying goodbye.

Bellissima escursione, posti davvero magici e un'organizzazione fantastica dall'inizio alla fine. L'unico piccolo intoppo è stato legato alla gestione del parcheggio da parte dei locals, ma la cosa è stata rimediata alla grande nel corso della giornata grazie alla gestione impeccabile. Si è formato subito un bel gruppo, molto affiatato: è stata una giornata piacevolissima e in ottima compagnia. Un'esperienza assolutamente da rifare, sicuramente anche nella bella stagione!

Questa escursione è stata rinviata diverse volte per maltempo, ma l'attesa è stata decisamente premiata! Una giornata di sole fantastica ci ha regalato panorami mozzafiato e colori meravigliosi. Luoghi bellissimi e accessibili a tutti, affollati ma non trafficati. Bellissima escursione, posti davvero magici e un'organizzazione fantastica dall'inizio alla fine. L'unico piccolo intoppo è stato legato alla gestione del parcheggio da parte dei locals, ma la cosa è stata rimediata alla grande nel corso della giornata grazie alla gestione impeccabile. Si è formato subito un bel gruppo, molto affiatato: è stata una giornata piacevolissima e in ottima compagnia. Un'esperienza assolutamente da rifare, sicuramente anche nella bella stagione!
