Alpe Granda Hike: Sunset with a View

Some walks stay with you because of the light.

We set off with the Guidders in the late afternoon from Cataeggio, in the Val Masino, and follow an old path through chestnut groves, beech woods and historic summer pastures. The climb is steady but pleasant, carried along by the scent of the woods and by ever-wider glimpses of the valley. As the minutes pass the light shifts, the colours warm and the view opens onto the star of the evening: Monte Disgrazia. At Alpe Granda we settle onto one of the finest natural balconies in the valley, just as the sun drops behind the mountains.
