WHY THIS HIKE

Croda de r'Ancona: solo summit

Two summit crosses, a 360° panorama, and Austrian trenches beneath your feet.

Group chat a couple of days before
Come alone, leave with new friends

The experience

We set off with the Guidders from the Strada Alemagna, where the SS51 cuts through the Ampezzo Valley, following the trail into the Dolomiti d'Ampezzo Natural Park through pastures and thinning woods as we gain height. It's an out-and-back route: we climb steadily toward Croda de r'Ancona, an isolated 2366m peak closing off the Croda Rossa group, with a steeper, loose-terrain stretch just before the summit rocks. At the top wait two crosses: one facing Croda Rossa and Val di Gòtres, the other looking toward Cristallo and the Cortina basin.

This mountain was an Austro-Hungarian stronghold in WWI, still hiding war remains that once controlled the Strada Alemagna, the only route north. Walking up here means stepping through history without needing a plaque to tell you.

5 reasons to join - an isolated, panoramic summit far from the crowds - two summit crosses, two different worlds to admire - Austrian war positions along the way - the whole Dolomiti d'Ampezzo Natural Park around you - the cool mountain air rewarding the summer climb

Who it's for You'll need trained legs and stamina for a few hours of walking, but no technical skills or gear: just sure footing on the steeper final stretches.

Bring plenty of water, we start early with the cool morning air and enjoy the altitude's breeze: at the end we've earned a cold beer together. Join the Guidders, the community is ready to go.

Hi Guidders! 🧡 I'm Alessandro, I'm 35 and I live in the heart of the Dolomites, in Cadore. I'm a mid-mountain leader with the Collegio Guide Alpine del Veneto and a UIMLA member, with a degree in Sport Science, an MTB guide and — yes — a sommelier too: after a hike, a good glass is never out of place. 🍷 I live the mountains in every form they come in: trekking, trail running, mountain bike adventures. Moving in nature is pure energy for me, discovery, feeling, and sharing it is the part of the job I never tire of. Panoramic ridge or woodland singletrack, the goal is the same: a real, active day that puts you back together. See you in the mountains, Guidders!
