Cogne in autumn: the Lillaz waterfalls and Lake Loie among the golden larches of Gran Paradiso
Lake Loie: Gran Paradiso gold
Waterfalls leaping between the rocks, a lake hidden among the larches and the peaks of Gran Paradiso in the background: Cogne in autumn is the Aosta Valley everyone dreams of.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Lillaz, the village above Cogne, and pass straight below the Lillaz waterfalls. Then the path climbs steadily through the larches, step after step, to Lake Loie, where we stop for lunch with the golden woods below us. On the way back we cross a small col and descend the Bardoney side valley, then follow the Urtier stream to Lillaz, closing the loop.
Gran Paradiso is Italy's oldest national park: it was born from the kings' hunting reserve to save the ibex, which had survived here and nowhere else in the Alps.
Anyone in good shape: the climb to the lake is steep and stepped, but with no difficult passages; the descent via Bardoney is gentler.
Come and see Gran Paradiso dressed for autumn with the Guidders: a day that stays with you for a long time.
Lillaz di Cogne is about two and three quarter hours from Milan: A4 and A5 to the Aosta Ovest exit, then the regional road up Val di Cogne to Cogne and the short climb to Lillaz. Car pooling in the outing's Telegram group.
