Cima Carega: the Roof of the Piccole Dolomiti from Campogrosso
Cima Carega: the Dolomites' roof
Two mini Dolomite walls, a hut hanging right under the summit, and the Piccole Dolomiti sky all to ourselves.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Rifugio Campogrosso, climbing through woods and scree up to Bocchetta dei Fondi: here the trail gets serious, with a cable-protected stretch leading us across rocky ledges and grassy knolls to Bocchetta Mosca. From there the climb pushes on hard up to Rifugio Mario Fraccaroli, tucked just below the top: a short final ramp brings us to the cross on Cima Carega, 2259 metres. It's a classic out-and-back route: same path up and down, giving us time to soak in every view twice.
Up here we're deep in the Piccole Dolomiti, with the famous Fumante spires standing guard all around us.
5 reasons to join - the highest peak of the Piccole Dolomiti, 2259 metres of pure view - a cable-protected stretch that makes the climb a real adventure - Rifugio Fraccaroli, an eagle's nest just under the summit cross - the Fumante spires crowning the whole landscape - an intense one-day hike, shared with us
