The experience

We set off with the Guidders from Forni, at the foot of the famous Forni glacier, and follow the old military mule track towards Malga Forni, working up the wild Val Cedéc to Cima Branca, 3,093 metres. From up there the landscape opens completely: the Ortles-Cevedale group fills the horizon with glaciers, ridges and summits that seem never to end. We descend towards Lago delle Rosole, a small jewel set among pasture and rock, pass the trenches and Rifugio Branca, and close the loop back at Forni.

We set off from the paid parking area on the Forni road from Santa Caterina, near the Rifugio Albergo Forni, in the heart of Stelvio National Park.
09:15VIEWPOINT
Valley Ascent
The trail enters the Rosole Valley, where the landscape becomes wilder, with moraines, mountain streams, and sweeping views of the Forni Glacier.
11:00SUMMIT
Branca Peak
Cima Branca is not a true summit, but rather a point along the long southern ridge descending from Monte Pasquale. Thanks to its spectacular views over the glacial basins above and its peaceful, easy approach, it is an ideal destination for discovering the beautiful Forni area.
11:30VIEWPOINT
Rosole Trenches
You’ll cross the Rosole Trenches area, a historic reminder of the First World War. The trail winds through military remains and panoramic ridgelines, in a wide-open, striking alpine setting that also tells the story of these mountains.

Branca Refuge
Arrival at Branca Hut, a perfect spot for a break or a scenic lunch overlooking the peaks of the Ortles-Cevedale range.

Return to Forni
You’ll return to the car park having completed a varied, rewarding circular route through glaciers, history, and sweeping Alpine views.
