Toce Cycle Path: spring ride from Feriolo to Piedimulera through villages and nature reserve
Toce Cycle Path
A river, a castle, a forest unchanged for a thousand years. We walk all day, but on flat ground.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Feriolo and follow the Toce river along an out-and-back route that's completely flat: no climbs, just easy kilometres along riverbanks, dirt tracks and woodland. We enter straight into the Toce River Nature Reserve, the most important wetland on Lake Maggiore, and in this spring season we find azaleas and rhododendrons blooming along the banks. Further on we reach Bosco Tenso, a patch of lowland forest unchanged since the 10th century, and cross Vogogna, one of Italy's most beautiful villages, with its castle overlooking the valley. We arrive in Piedimulera, where the Ferrerio Tower rises against the sky, before heading back the way we came.
Along this valley, between 1915 and 1918, an enormous defensive network of trenches, military roads and artillery posts took shape: today only quiet traces remain in the landscape.
5 reasons to join - a river to follow nearly all day, effortlessly - Bosco Tenso, a thousand-year-old forest - Vogogna, a medieval village with its castle - spring blooms all along the reserve - rest stops scattered along the whole route
