Evening Snowshoe Hike to Lake Palù: Discover Snow-Covered Valmalenco with the Guidders
Lake Palù and Dinner
We set off just as everyone else is heading down.
The experience
With the Guidders we strap on our snowshoes at San Giuseppe, in the Valmalenco, in the late afternoon, and climb towards one of the finest spots in the Sondrio area: Lago Palù, set among conifer woods and snowy peaks. It is a winter classic, but at sunset it changes face completely. We move into the woods on the path towards Pauletto, Barchetto and Zocca as the light slowly goes. By the time we reach the lake, the quiet of evening has replaced the bustle of the ski area, and a basin opens up below Sasso Nero and Monte Roggione. We come back down with head torches on.
5 reasons to come - reaching Lago Palù exactly at sunset - the woods emptying out as the light fades - the basin below Sasso Nero and Monte Roggione - the head-torch descent, which is half the adventure - a Valmalenco classic seen the way few people see it
Who it suits Normal hiking fitness is enough: the climb is steady and in good winter conditions it asks nothing extreme.
The mountains as night falls are another thing: come and see it with the Guidders.
