WHY THIS HIKE

Snowshoeing from La Magdeleine to Chamois

A scenic itinerary through enchanted villages and views of the Matterhorn

Group chat a couple of days before
Come alone, leave with new friends

The experience

A snowshoe hike suitable for many, panoramic and full of charm, connecting two of the most characteristic villages of the Aosta Valley:✨ La Magdeleine, a quiet, sunny balcony overlooking the valley,✨ Chamois, the only car-free village in Italy, accessible only on foot or by cable car.

We start from La Magdeleine following the snowy track of the path of the hamlets, a perfect route for those who love the winter mountains without facing excessive elevation gains. The trail winds through silent larch forests, ancient chalets, and open spaces where the snow reflects the light in almost magical ways.

As we ascend, the views become ever more expansive: the Matterhorn appears and disappears between the trees, imposing and photogenic, while the Matterhorn Paradise basin accompanies the walk. The ascent is constant but gentle, also ideal for those who want to approach snowshoeing with an accessible but exciting route.

We will then reach the Pilaz alpine pasture, a perfect panoramic point for a short stop: the atmosphere here is special, suspended between snowy woods and open views of the Aosta Valley mountains.

A simple, varied and evocative snowshoe hike, perfect to experience with the Guidders community, among snow, panoramas and villages that seem to come from an Alpine fairy tale 🧡.

Pilaz Pass - Giant Bench
We'll follow the winter trail leading up towards Pilaz, nestled within a sparse larch forest that remains wonderfully bright, even in winter. The ascent is steady and consistent, never too steep, making it perfect for getting into a good rhythm with snowshoes. As we gain altitude, the forest gradually opens up, giving way to wide, panoramic clearings. From here, we'll begin to glimpse the Matterhorn, the Chamois basin, and the ridge that separates Valtournenche and Val d'Ayas.
13:00VIEWPOINT
Chamois Watching Tours. Spot these elusive mountain goats!
The winter trail continues with a gentle descent into a denser section of forest. The atmosphere immediately becomes quieter and more intimate, with taller larches, dappled shade, and a route that follows an old mule track, still easily visible even with heavy snow. The slope remains moderate and consistent, with no exposed sections. Emerging from the woods, the landscape opens up again onto wide, snow-covered meadows and the high plateau where the village of Chamois is located. The final stretch is almost completely flat: a peaceful walk through isolated chalets, stone walls, and bright, open glades.
16:30RETURN
Return
After visiting the village center of Chamois, the return to La Magdeleine begins by following the well-trodden path leading to the hamlet of La Ville. The trail is mostly flat and crosses a series of sunny clearings, offering magnificent views of the village's traditional chalets and the snow-capped ridges that frame the plateau. Upon reaching La Ville, the path gradually ascends towards the Chamois altiport: a unique, small airstrip perched at almost 2000 meters. In winter, it offers a stunning vista of the scenic slope on which it's carved.

Hi Guidders! 🧡 I'm Federica, an environmental hiking guide, and the mountains have been my life companion for as long as I can remember. I've been out in them for over 35 years: since my parents carried me in a rucksack along the trails and up the peaks of the Aosta Valley. And once I started walking on my own two feet, I never stopped. After years of experience and training I chose to make it my job, wanting to share this passion and to show people the genuine beauty of the mountains. On my outings I like creating experiences that are simple, honest and full of wonder, because every trail has a story to tell — and it's almost always more interesting than the elevation gain. 🥾🌿 See you in the mountains, Guidders!
