China: 10 days in Yunnan, from Tiger Leaping Gorge to the Tibetan plateau
Yunnan: the China that walks, between deep gorges and Tibetan monasteries
This is not the China of megacities. Yunnan is the south-western province where twenty-five different minorities live, where mountains pass 5,000 metres and trails run through villages. The heart of the trip is Tiger Leaping Gorge: two days on the high trail, six hundred metres above the Yangtze, between Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Haba, with a night in a guesthouse on the edge.
Is this trip for me?
Five vibes, an effort level and a type of trip: so you can tell in ten seconds if it's for you.
Before that there is Lijiang, a UNESCO Naxi old town of canals and wooden roofs. After it we climb to Shangri-La, at 3,200 metres: culturally this is already Tibet, among prayer flags, yaks and the Songzanlin monastery, a small-scale Potala. We finish in Dali, on lake Erhai, where the pace slows down.
