Chamois and Lake Lod: on foot to the car-free village, among golden larches facing the Matterhorn
Chamois: golden larches, Matterhorn
A village cars never reach, a lake among the larches and the Matterhorn rising behind the peaks: Chamois in autumn looks like an invented place.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Buisson and climb on foot along the old mule track, for centuries the only way up: chestnuts down low, then ever more golden larches, up to the hamlet of La Ville and the square of Chamois. From there a gentle path takes us to Lake Lod, where we stop for lunch with the Matterhorn as a backdrop. Going down is effortless: five minutes of cable car over the coloured forest.
Chamois is the only municipality on the Italian mainland closed to cars: you arrive by cable car or on foot, and in the village you get around on foot, by bike or in small electric vehicles.
Anyone with a good pace: the mule track climbs steadily for most of the morning, but the cable car takes care of the descent.
Come and discover the best-kept secret of the Aosta Valley with the Guidders: autumn in Chamois has a colour all its own.
Buisson, a hamlet of Antey-Saint-André, is about two hours from Milan: A4 and A5 to Châtillon-Saint-Vincent, then the Valtournenche road and the turn-off for Buisson. Parking at the cable car station, first two hours free. Car pooling in the outing's Telegram group.
