Two waterfalls, a golden autumn forest, and a loop that brings you right back where you started.

The experience

We set off with the Guidders from Varsi, right at the foot of Monte Dosso, along the ancient Via Francigena. We climb with the Guidders following the Rio Golotta on a path fitted with wooden footbridges and boards carved with lines from the Canticle of the Creatures, up to the first Rio Golotta Waterfall and then the second, even more scenic one. The forest turns red and gold in autumn, and the afternoon light makes it even more beautiful. The route is a loop: after the waterfalls we gain height toward Monte Dosso, where a small chapel on top offers endless views over the plain and surrounding mountains, then we descend toward Lago di Varsi before heading back to the village.

The village of Varsi sits on the historic Via Francigena, walked for centuries by pilgrims and armies heading toward Liguria and Tuscany: we're walking a path far older than us.

We climb along the equipped trail with wooden footbridges, surrounded by golden leaves and the sound of flowing water. The autumn woods guide us towards the waterfalls.

Rio Golotta Waterfalls
We reach the waterfalls, surrounded by water spray and autumn colors framing the valley. A steep descent takes us right beneath the falls, a sight not to be missed.

Monte Dosso — lunch break with a view
We climb steadily through autumn vegetation up to the top of Monte Dosso, where the little church dominates the valley as far as the eye can see. We stop for lunch with a view that's worth every step of the climb.

Return to the cars in Varsi
We descend through golden woods to close the loop in the village of Varsi. With the Guidders we enjoy a cold beer or a coke at the cars, toasting to this autumn hike.
