WHY THIS TRIP

Italy's most spectacular walk goes where they dug for lead

In Sulcis-Iglesiente, south-west Sardinia, lead, zinc and silver were mined for a hundred and fifty years. Then the mines closed and stayed: shafts, washing plants, workers' villages and rails that end at the sea. The Cammino di Santa Barbara, named after the miners' patron saint, links them in a network of paths no other Italian route can match for landscape.
