WHY THIS TRIP

From where he died to where he never returned

Dante died in Ravenna in 1321, twenty years into exile, and never saw Florence again. The Cammino di Dante joins the two cities across the Tuscan-Romagnol Apennines. We walk its finest stretches, almost 80 kilometres over five days, and link them by minibus: that way it fits into six days without walking across the plain or along busy roads.

It starts at Dante's tomb and the mosaics of Ravenna. Then from Oriolo to Brisighella with its donkeys' street, from Marradi to the Acquacheta waterfall of Inferno XVI, along the ridge of the Casentino Forests to the hermitage of Camaldoli, and down to Poppi castle, above the plain where Dante fought at Campaldino. On the last day you walk into Florence, from the Incontro hill to Santa Croce. You sleep in village hotels, a scattered hotel and the guesthouse of the Camaldoli monks.

MUST READ

Meeting at Dante's tombMEETING POINT14:45
We meet in front of Dante's tomb, where the Cammino starts, with your Guiddy Coordinator, after dropping the bags at the hotel. Florence has been asking for the poet's bones for centuries and Ravenna has never handed them over: the lamp on the tomb, though, burns Tuscan olive oil. You get to Ravenna by train or by car-pooling with other participants: say so when you book, then sort it out in the Telegram group.
The gold of San Vitale and Galla PlacidiaCHURCH
The afternoon is for the mosaics: Ravenna has eight UNESCO monuments in a small city. You start with San Vitale and the mausoleum of Galla Placidia, whose fifth-century starry vault looks made yesterday. Entry is at the time booked for the group; the ticket is included.
The baptistery and Sant'Apollinare NuovoCHURCH
The same ticket covers the Neonian Baptistery, also at a booked time, and the basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, with its two processions of saints along the nave. Free evening in the centre: dinner is not included.
