WHY THIS TRIP

A 108-kilometre loop where the history was made by bandits

After Italian unification these valleys between Latium and Abruzzo were bandit country: farmers turned outlaws who hid in the woods and knew the paths better than the army. The Cammino dei Briganti retraces their movements in a 108-kilometre loop around Sante Marie, and tells a story that is not taught in school.

In four days you walk about 72 km of it, the finest: the Val de Varri, the Salto valley, the beech wood that climbs to Lake Duchessa and Cartore, the only village inside the reserve, where a single family lives today. The stretch from Cartore to Le Crete, 34 km on foot, is done by car; on the last day you walk back to Sante Marie and the loop is closed.

Effort

MUST READ
Optional extras
PAID ON SITE
Museo del brigantaggio a Sante Marie: 3 € a persona (prezzo 2026). Si visita la domenica all'arrivo, chiedendo all'Ufficio Salvacondotti.
Weather and changes of plan
Partenze a fine maggio e a metà novembre.
Insurance
INCLUDED
Assicurazione infortuni, medico e bagaglio Guiddy inclusa nella quota.

At 9 the group meets at the Salvacondotti office, on the ground floor of the town hall, to collect the salvacondotto: the route's credential, stamped along the way. You get here by car, car-pooling with the other Guidders: say so when you book, then sort it out in the Telegram group. The cars stay three nights in the unattended car park the office points out, and you find them again on Sunday at the end of the walk.
Up to Santo StefanoHIKING TRAIL
You leave the old centre following the red-and-white waymarks and climb 6 km to Santo Stefano, at 1,050 metres: there is a bar for the last coffee before the valley.
The Val de Varri, the quietest valleyAREAS OF NATURAL VALUE
You drop into the Val de Varri, the least touristy valley on the route: the road through it was surfaced only a few years ago. Packed lunch along the trail (bring it from home or buy it in Sante Marie in the morning), then you cross a small mountain, above 1,200 metres, and a panoramic path leads straight to Nesce.
Nesce, guests of two familiesRURAL AREAS
A medieval village in the Salto valley, where two families have opened their homes to walkers and cook the dinner themselves. The group splits between the two houses. Nesce has no bar and no shop.
