Bagni di Masino in autumn: the ancient beech forest and Val Porcellizzo below Pizzo Badile
Bagni di Masino: beech and Badile
Beeches that have seen two centuries go by, a forest that lights up copper and gold in October, and above it the granite walls of Pizzo Badile: autumn in Val Masino starts here.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Bagni di Masino, the old spa hamlet at the head of the valley, and walk straight into the forest of ancient beeches, one of the finest woods in Valtellina. Then the path climbs through the larches to the pasture of Corte Vecchia and on into Val Porcellizzo, which suddenly opens onto an amphitheatre of granite. Lunch by the alpine hut with Badile and Cengalo ahead, then back the same way as low light threads through the beeches.
Pizzo Badile, 3,308 metres, is a climbing legend: its north-east face, on the Swiss side, is one of the six great north faces of the Alps.
Anyone in good shape: the climb to Val Porcellizzo is steady on a mountain path, but with no difficult passages.
Come and discover Val Masino's best-kept corner with the Guidders: beeches, larches and granite, all in the same day.
Bagni di Masino is about two hours from Milan: the SS36 to Colico, the Valtellina road to Ardenno, then the Val Masino road to its end, beyond San Martino. Car pooling in the outing's Telegram group.
