Tracciolino Loop: from Verceia to San Giorgio through tunnels and autumn colors
Tracciolino: rails & foliage
A trail that runs along old railway tracks, through tunnels carved into the rock and a village frozen in time.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Verceia, climbing through the woods of Vico already lit up by autumn colors. The route is a loop: a steady climb up to 970 m, then a long walk along the Tracciolino, the former 1930s railway track built to carry men and materials to Val Codera. We walk through bridges and tunnels carved into the rock, the longest stretching 370 meters, with Val Codera opening up below us. We then descend toward San Giorgio, a village reachable only on foot, down steps and tight switchbacks, with the golden afternoon light setting the woods on fire.
In San Giorgio we find a small church with a separate bell tower and a carved stone linked to ancient funeral rites: a piece of history few people know about.
5 reasons to join - a former railway turned into a scenic trail - rock-carved tunnels, among the most striking around - San Giorgio, an isolated and perfectly preserved village - autumn foliage lighting up the whole forest - open views over Lake Mezzola and Lake Como
