WHY THIS HIKE

The Monte Coltignone loop above Lecco

The Mount Coltignone Ring from the Alta Via delle Grigne is a technical and highly panoramic trekking route, designed for experienced and well-trained hikers looking for a day of true mountain experience above Lecco. Starting from the city, the route ascends along the Alta Via delle Grigne, a path that is sometimes exposed, fun, and never predictable, offering spectacular views of Lake Lecco and the entire eastern branch of Lake Como. The ascent to Mount Coltignone is continuous and challenging, but extremely rewarding: rocky passages, technical sections, and open panoramas make this itinerary a true training ground for those who love characterful treks. From the summit, the view sweeps from the Grigne to the Resegone, down to the plain and the lake below, offering a feeling of conquest that more than repays the effort. An excursion of great satisfaction, ideal for Guiders who want to test themselves, experience the high route in all its beauty, and share an intense, technical, and memorable experience.

HOW TO GET THERE
08:00PARKING
Starting Point
We'll meet in Lecco, in the Santo Stefano area, right at the foot of the San Martino rockfall barrier.
10:00MOUNTAIN HUT
Mount San Martino
We'll hike to the Rifugio Piazza, nestled on Mount San Martino above Lecco, taking the classic trail #52. We might even spice things up with a detour via the "Saltarei" (an expert-level section!).
14:00EXPERT TRAIL
Resinelli Plains
"From San Martino to the Piani dei Resinelli, we'll follow trail 52, which traverses the entire Val Verde. The hike progresses from a standard hiking level (E) to a level suitable for Experienced Hikers (EE). Here, we'll get a taste of the Grigne's rocky terrain while remaining at a lower altitude. Expect some assisted sections, stepped passages to navigate both uphill and downhill, steep ascents and descents with slightly exposed sections where sure-footedness and a head for heights are essential. The lake will be below us, providing constant and stunning scenery."
14:30SUMMIT
Mount Coltignone: Conquer the Summit!
Starting from Resinelli, we'll reach Coltignone, the highest point of our loop. We'll pass by the famous panoramic walkway, but we'll find a quieter spot to truly enjoy the views (and grab a bite to eat) away from the crowds.
16:00HIKING TRAIL
Laorca
From Resinelli, we'll descend along the Calolden Valley to the Laorca district. Here, we can make a quick visit to the charming Laorca cemetery, considered one of the oldest existing cemeteries. It lies at the foot of the Corna Medale, nestled in a kind of natural amphitheater characterized by caves and recesses. One of these caves is said to have inspired Leonardo da Vinci in his painting, "The Virgin of the Rocks."
17:00RETURN
End of the hike
Finally, we'll head back to the vehicles along a path that's partly on roads, completing our loop hike.

Hi Guidders! 🧡 I'm Paolo, a mid-mountain leader registered with the Collegio Regionale Guide Alpine Lombardia. With a degree in engineering, I live in Lecco, where I was born and raised on the slopes of Monte Resegone. I've always loved my city, squeezed between the lake and the mountains, for the landscapes it offers from every angle: from the top of its peaks or from the shore. Over the years, in my free time, I've taken up plenty of outdoor activities — trekking, cycling, canoeing, skiing — and raced in trail running and skyrunning events. A great passion for nature and for my own patch is what pushed me into guiding: sharing a love for the trails, the summits and the landscapes around Lecco is the part that gives me most satisfaction. ⛰ See you in the mountains, Guidders!
