WHY THIS HIKE

The Rock Art of the Ciappi

10:15PARKING
Calvisio Vecchio
A short drive: we will group up to reduce the number of cars to park and head up to the Calvisio Vecchio car park, the starting point of our trek.
10:30HIKING TRAIL
Loop of the "Ciappi" with Rock Carvings
Calvisio Vecchio - a hamlet of Finale Ligure (SV) - is the gateway to our journey. In the Finale hinterland, hidden within an environment of mysterious beauty, Roman bridges and rock carvings tell us of the ancient presence of man on these plateaus. Today almost deserted and covered by dense, impenetrable vegetation, they were once clearly visible and linked by a dense network of mule tracks, leading to places of worship, settlements, plots of land and shelters for shepherds. For those able to notice the details, traces of man are still clearly visible today, and at times enigmatic. We will come across springs, rock carvings on the typical "ciappi" slabs, retrace traditions lost in the mists of time, and blur ever further the line between paganism and Christianity. Among these woods, stories, tales and impressions await us, immersed in the scent of Mediterranean scrub and, now and then, with a sea view!
15:30RETURN
Calvisio Vecchio
Once back at the Calvisio Vecchio car park, we will get back in our cars to drive down to Finale Ligure and head home. The times in the programme are approximate - except for the meeting time - as the actual timing will depend on the pace of the group and the number of stops made during the hike.

Hi Guidders! 🧡 I'm Giorgia, an environmental hiking guide: raised among trails, and glad I never stopped. I've lived the mountains since I was a child, and since 2019 I've turned that passion into a full-time job. I guide adults and children along the trails of the Apennines, the Alps and around Europe, with a constant appetite for discovering, learning and sharing. I'm never still: I study, read, write, fly a drone, raise butterflies and raise small muddy explorers through Adventure Education projects. And yes, I'm happy: this is the life I dreamed of, and there's nothing in the world I'd rather do "when I grow up". 🦋🥾 See you in the mountains, Guidders!
