In the Maritime Alps something happens that happens nowhere else: two hours of driving take you from the two thousand four hundred metres of the Vallée des Merveilles, with its snowfields and glacial lakes, to the Esterel calanques, where red rock drops into the sea. Same range, same trip.

Rifugio nel Mercantour e hotel sulla costa
Up high lies the Mercantour park with forty thousand Bronze Age rock carvings cut into the slabs below Monte Bego, which shepherds held sacred. Below lies the coast everyone calls the Côte d'Azur, which on foot is another thing entirely: customs paths above the sea, maritime pines and coves with no road.

Una notte in rifugio dentro il parco del Mercantour, in camerata, e due notti in hotel sulla costa, fra Mentone e l'Esterel.
Transport
Il ritrovo è in hotel a Tenda: da Milano sono quattro ore d'auto. Ci si accorda in car pooling fra partecipanti: lo indichi in prenotazione, poi ci si organizza nel gruppo Telegram. Con le stesse auto ci si sposta sul posto. Il traforo del Tenda o la strada costiera secondo i cantieri in corso.

We meet at the hotel in Tenda, where your Guiddy Coordinator is waiting: we set off together from here. Get here on your own or car-pooling with the other participants; if you are coming from far away, it is worth spending the night before here.

You leave the cars at Castérino and climb into the park: two and a half hours among larches and scree to the hut, the first glacial lakes appearing in the hollows.

The Merveilles hut sits at 2,111 metres facing the Lac Long: from here tomorrow you set off for the carvings.
