Val Vogna in autumn: the Walser hamlets and the little lake of Alpe Larecchio among golden larches
Val Vogna: larches and Walser
Wooden houses darkened by the sun, frescoed chapels, a stone bridge over the stream and, at the end, a little lake among the larches: Val Vogna is the Walser valley that has stayed as it was seven centuries ago.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Ca' di Janzo and walk up the valley on the old mule track, hamlet after hamlet: Sant'Antonio, Peccia with its stone bridge, La Montata. The larch wood grows thicker and more golden until the valley opens onto the plateau of Alpe Larecchio and its little lake. Packed lunch by the water, then back the same way, with the low sun lighting up the wooden façades.
The Walser came up into Val Vogna in the early fourteenth century, crossing over from Gressoney, and built wood-and-stone houses made to withstand endless winters: many are still lived in during the summer.
Anyone happy to walk for a few hours: the mule track climbs slowly and has no difficult passages.
Come and discover Alagna's secret valley with the Guidders: in October it is the most golden walk in the Valsesia.
Ca' di Janzo is about two hours from Milan: A4 and A26 to Romagnano Sesia-Ghemme, then the Valsesia road to Riva Valdobbia, part of Alagna, and the small Val Vogna road. Parking at Ca' di Janzo. Car pooling in the outing's Telegram group.
