Three Huts Loop in Val Bognanco: the peat bog, Lake Ragozza and the Monscera among golden larches
Three Huts: Val Bognanco gold
Little lakes mirroring the larches, a peat bog crossed on wooden boardwalks and Switzerland just beyond the pass: this is one of the Ossola's best-loved autumn loops.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Alpe San Bernardo, at the top of Val Bognanco, and walk into the larch woods to the Gattascosa peat bog, crossed on boardwalks. Then Lake Ragozza, the Gattascosa hut and a gentle climb to the Monscera lake and pass, right on the border, where we stop for lunch facing the peaks of the Valais. The way back is a loop: down past Alpe Monscera and the Il Dosso hut, still among the larches, to San Bernardo.
Bognanco is the valley of a hundred waterfalls, and the Monscera pass was one of the smugglers' routes: their packs of coffee and cigarettes once came through here.
Anyone with a bit of fitness: we climb slowly on wide, well-marked paths, with plenty of stops.
Light pack and a camera: with the Guidders you discover Val Bognanco in autumn one bend at a time.
San Bernardo di Bognanco is just over two hours from Milan: A8 and A26, the Simplon expressway to Domodossola, then the winding Val Bognanco road to its end. Large car park in front of the hut. Car pooling in the outing's Telegram group.
