WHY THIS TRIP
An island where five hours take you from the ocean to two thousand metres
Sri Lanka is small and has everything: you climb Adam's Peak at night, 5,500 steps in the dark alongside Buddhist pilgrims, to see sunrise from the 2,243-metre summit and the perfectly triangular shadow the mountain casts on the clouds. You walk Ella Rock and the Horton Plains, where the plateau ends abruptly in a nine-hundred-metre drop called World's End.

In between is the tea plantation train from Kandy to Ella, six hours on a blue train with open doors through the tea hills: widely held to be one of the finest rail journeys in the world. It ends on the south coast at Mirissa, with whales and palm beaches.
