WHY THIS TRIP
The Carpathians: Europe's wildest mountains, two hours from home
Almost half of Europe's brown bears live in the Carpathians, along with wolves and lynx: it is the continent's last great wild forest, and you get there on a direct flight for a couple of hundred euros. You walk the ridge of Piatra Craiului, a limestone blade twenty-five kilometres long, and climb into the Făgăraș massif to the 2,535 metres of Negoiu, among glacial lakes and metal huts.

In between there are the Transfăgărășan, the road that switchbacks up to lake Bâlea at 2,034 metres, the Saxon towns with the fortified churches of Sighișoara and Sibiu, and an evening at the bear sanctuary in Zărnești, home to a hundred animals rescued from circus cages. You sleep in family-run pensiuni, eat sarmale and sour soup and spend very little.

Volo non incluso: diretti quotidiani da Milano e Bergamo su Bucarest, Cluj o Sibiu. Sul posto van privato con autista per tutti gli spostamenti, compresa la Transfăgărășan.
