Monte Lesima in autumn: the golden beech ridge on the roof of the Oltrepò Pavese
Monte Lesima: golden beeches
A ridge running between Lombardy and Emilia, beech woods as far as the eye can see turning red and gold in October and, on clear days, the whole chain of the Alps lined up: Monte Lesima is the Apennines closest to Milan.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from the Piani del Lesima, above Brallo di Pregola, and climb through the beech wood to the Sella la Colla. From there the ridge leads us from top to top, Monte Terme and Monte Tartago, up to the summit of Lesima, where we stop for lunch with views from the plain to the Alps. We loop back through the woods, among crunching leaves and silvery trunks.
Lesima is the highest peak of the Oltrepò: the big white sphere just below the summit is an air traffic control radar, recognisable from all over the plain.
Anyone who walks with some regularity: the climbs are short and the ridge is broad, with no exposed sections.
Come and discover autumn in the Apennines with the Guidders: beeches, ridges and a view you won't expect.
Piani del Lesima is about two hours from Milan: A7 to Casei Gerola or Voghera, then Varzi, the Brallo pass and the road to Piani del Lesima. Car pooling in the outing's Telegram group.
