Monte Camoscio and the Alpini chestnut party: Baveno's pink granite and roasted chestnuts on Lake Maggiore
Baveno: chestnuts by the lake
The mountain of pink granite, the Borromean Islands beneath your feet and, on the way back, the Alpini's roasted chestnuts on the lakeside: an autumn Sunday in Baveno has it all.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from the centre of Baveno and climb through the hamlets of Romanico and Loita, then through the woods to Alpe Vedabia and the summit of Monte Camoscio, where we have lunch facing the Borromean Gulf. We descend to the panoramic cross and via Oltrefiume back to the lake, where the Alpini chestnut party awaits with roasted chestnuts.
Baveno's pink granite comes from Monte Camoscio and was used for famous columns and monuments: the old quarries can still be seen along the path.
Anyone who walks regularly: the climb is steady, with no difficult passages.
Come to Baveno with the Guidders: lake, woods and roasted chestnuts in a single Sunday.
Baveno is just over an hour from Milan: A8 and A26 to Baveno. By train, regional services to Domodossola from Milan stop at Baveno. Car pooling in the outing's Telegram group.
