Granite ridges and trenches at 2,757 metres

The basin of Lago della Vacca is ringed by granite ridges that look drawn by hand: the most iconic lead to the Blumone and to Cima Laione, our goal at 2,757 metres, right on the border between Lombardy and Trentino.

The experience

It is one of the first stages of the Adamello's Alta Via number 1, and its history is felt as you walk: along the route we pass remains of the First World War, including the ruins of a high-altitude military hospital. We start from Malga Cadino della Banca, above Breno, and climb to Rifugio Tita Secchi, where the ground turns to pure granite.

From the summit the view takes in Lago della Vacca, Val Paghera and the Gaver. It is 18 kilometres and 1,000 metres of ascent over nine hours: the hardest day in our Brescia calendar, and one of the finest.

This is a hard hike for its length and ascent: 18 kilometres, 1,000 metres of climbing and nine hours on alpine, rocky ground. Good fitness and a sure step are needed. Bring sturdy boots, plenty of water and a windproof jacket: at altitude the weather turns fast.

Meeting at Malga Cadino della Banca
We meet the Guidders at Malga Cadino della Banca, above Breno (BS), where we leave the cars and start walking. It is a long day, so we set off early at a steady pace. The time is indicative: the exact one is shared in the outing's Telegram group.
10:00MOUNTAIN HUT
Rifugio Tita Secchi and Lago della Vacca
We climb to Rifugio Tita Secchi, overlooking Lago della Vacca. From here the trail changes character and turns to granite: the basin opens up in front of us, closed by the ridges leading to the Blumone. A short break before the final climb.
12:30SUMMIT
On the summit of Cima Laione (2,757 m)
The final stretch takes us to the top of Cima Laione, on the Lombardy-Trentino border. From here the view runs over Lago della Vacca, Val Paghera and the Gaver, with the trenches and remains of the Great War all around. A stop for lunch and photos.
17:00RETURN
Back to Malga Cadino
We descend the same trail we came up, passing Lago della Vacca again with the afternoon light on the granite. At the cars we take the time for a toast before saying goodbye.
