Gran Bosco di Salbertrand in autumn: through firs and golden larches to the Arlaud hut
Gran Bosco: Susa Valley gold
A forest so big it has a name of its own, dark firs like cathedrals and, above the pastures, larches turning gold in October: the Gran Bosco di Salbertrand is the green heart of the Susa Valley.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Pinea, at the park entrance, and climb through the forest past the houses of Buissonière and Etanche, old mountain hamlets among the trees. We leave the woods for the pastures of Montagne Seu, where the larches light up in front of the valley's peaks, and stop for lunch at the Arlaud hut. We loop back on the Grande Traversata delle Alpi path, past the Grange d'Himbert.
The Gran Bosco is a forest of silver fir and Norway spruce unique in Piedmont: for centuries it supplied the valleys with timber and charcoal, and the Salbertrand ecomuseum still tells the story of its charcoal burners.
Anyone in good shape: the climb is long but always on comfortable paths and tracks, with no difficult passages.
Come and walk the Gran Bosco with the Guidders: autumn in the Susa Valley smells of resin and glows with larches.
Salbertrand is about two and a quarter hours from Milan, all on motorways: A4 to Turin, then the Frejus motorway to the Oulx Est exit and the road to Pinea. Car pooling in the outing's Telegram group.
