Cheneil and Lago Blu: golden larches and the Matterhorn's reflection in autumn Valtournenche
Lago Blu: Matterhorn and larches
A village you reach only by lift, a sanctuary looking out at the Matterhorn and a little lake among the larches mirroring one of the world's most famous mountains: autumn in Valtournenche looks drawn by hand.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from the Barmaz car park and ride the lift up to Cheneil, the car-free hamlet. From there the path climbs through the larches and then across the pastures to the Colle di Fontana Fredda and the Clavalité sanctuary, where we have lunch facing the Matterhorn. Back at Cheneil, we end the day at Lago Blu, near Breuil-Cervinia: a short walk through the woods to the shore, where on still days the Matterhorn is mirrored among the golden larches.
It was from Breuil that Jean-Antoine Carrel first climbed the Matterhorn from the Italian side in 1865, three days after Whymper: the Gran Becca, 4,478 metres, has been the valley's symbol ever since.
Anyone with some fitness: the climb to the col is steady and never technical, and Lago Blu is a stroll.
Come and see the Matterhorn in its autumn colours with the Guidders: it is the photo everyone wants, and we take it together.
The Barmaz car park, above Valtournenche, is about two and a half hours from Milan: A4 and A5 to Châtillon-Saint-Vincent, then the Valtournenche road and the turn-off for Cheneil. Lago Blu is a quarter of an hour further up, before Breuil-Cervinia. Car pooling in the outing's Telegram group.
