Cammino dei Briganti: 4 days in a loop between Latium and Abruzzo
A 108-kilometre loop where the history was made by bandits
After Italian unification these valleys between Latium and Abruzzo were bandit country: farmers turned outlaws who hid in the woods and knew the paths better than the army. The Cammino dei Briganti retraces their movements in a 108-kilometre loop around Sante Marie, and tells a story that is not taught in school.
Is this trip for me?
Five vibes, an effort level and a type of trip: so you can tell in ten seconds if it's for you.
In four days you walk about 72 km of it, the finest: the Val de Varri, the Salto valley, the beech wood that climbs to Lake Duchessa and Cartore, the only village inside the reserve, where a single family lives today. The stretch from Cartore to Le Crete, 34 km on foot, is done by car; on the last day you walk back to Sante Marie and the loop is closed.
