A terrace at 2,319 metres above the lake

Bivacco Valerio Festa stands at Passo Galinera, at 2,319 metres, in one of the finest basins of the Adamello Park. From up there you can pick out the imposing Monte Aviolo, Cima Baitone and Corno delle Granate: the peaks that close this corner of Val Camonica.

The experience

Below the pass lie the waters of Lago d'Aviolo, one of the best-known lakes in the park. Just before it stands the hut of the same name, where we stop for a drink: in the meadows around, in early summer, edelweiss are everywhere.

It is 10 kilometres and 1,000 metres of ascent over seven hours: a continuous, demanding climb, repaid by a bivouac that is effectively a terrace hanging above the lake.

This is a hard hike: 1,000 metres of ascent over ten kilometres, with a continuous climb and stony ground higher up. Trained legs and a sure step are needed. Bring sturdy boots, poles and plenty of water. The Rifugio La Cascata car park costs 4 euros a day and is not included.

HOW TO GET THERE

Meeting at Rifugio La Cascata
We meet the Guidders at the car park of Rifugio La Cascata, above the village of Vezza d'Oglio (BS). The car park costs 4 euros a day and is not included. Introductions and off we go. The exact time is shared in the outing's Telegram group.
10:30LAKE
Lago d'Aviolo
After the first long climb we reach Lago d'Aviolo, set among the park's peaks. Just before the lake stands the hut of the same name: we stop for a drink and to look at the edelweiss in the meadows around.
12:00BIVOUAC
Bivacco Valerio Festa at Passo Galinera (2,319 m)
The final climb, over stony ground, brings us to the panoramic Passo Galinera and Bivacco Valerio Festa. From here the whole lake is visible below, with Monte Aviolo, Cima Baitone and Corno delle Granate closing the horizon. Lunch stop.
15:30RETURN
Back to Vezza d'Oglio
We descend the way we came, passing the lake again with the afternoon light on the water. At the cars we take the time for a toast before saying goodbye.
