Passo San Marco Trek: Lake Pescegallo and Salmurano Refuge in the Orobie Alps

Description
History, nature and endless views: welcome to one of the most complete hikes in the Orobie Alps, near Bergamo.
We start from Rifugio Passo San Marco, above Mezzoldo, and walk along the ancient Via Priula, the road built by the Republic of Venice in the 1500s to connect Bergamo to Valtellina. We pass by Cantoniera San Marco, a historic Venetian customs post, reach Passo Verrobbio with its untouched WWI trenches and tunnels, and climb up to Lake Pescegallo, a crystal-clear lake overlooking Valtellina. The way back is a scenic traverse across high-altitude meadows that closes the loop: 13 km, 860 meters of elevation gain, six hours surrounded by breathtaking views.
