Snowshoeing at Pian di Gembro with dinner at the mountain lodge: the magic of winter above Aprica

A high plateau bog, the snow and a hot dinner.

We are above Aprica, inside the Pian di Gembro Nature Reserve: an alpine wetland where the mountains feel nothing like the ski resorts next door. With the Guidders we walk slowly over the snow on an easy loop, through open spaces and silent spruce woods, learning what makes this reserve special in botany, geology and history. We pass the little church of San Fortunato, the finest viewpoint of the circuit, where the view opens onto the Valtellina, Aprica and the eastern Orobie with Monte Torena dominating the skyline. Then we step into the warmth of the Ristoro Pian di Gembro for dinner.
