Monte Zeda 2,156 m: panoramic ridge in the Val Grande National Park
Guiddy Difficulty Levels
Difficult
Description
An airy ridge above the Val Grande, the largest wild area in the Alps.
We set off with the Guidders from Cappella Porta, above Caprezzo, and climb through the woods to Rifugio Pian Cavallone, on a grassy saddle looking out over Lake Maggiore. That is where the best part begins: the ridge leading to Monte Zeda, with airy sections and a few stretches fitted with chains. It is not a via ferrata — we take it calmly, with a steady step. At the summit you stand between two worlds: wild Val Grande on one side, Lake Maggiore on the other, with Monte Rosa behind. We return the same way.
5 reasons to come
- the chained ridge linking Pian Cavallone to Monte Zeda
- the signature summit of the Val Grande National Park
- lake, plain and Monte Rosa in a single view
- Rifugio Pian Cavallone on its grassy saddle
- the Val Grande wilderness in a day, no overnight needed
Who it suits
You need fitness, ridge experience and a head for exposure: the passages are airy, though never technical.
Come and take it with the Guidders: ridges like this one are rare in Piedmont.
