Monte Lema from Alpe Pradecolo: the beech wood loop between Italy and Switzerland above Luino
Monte Lema: beeches above Luino
Two lakes from a single summit, a beech wood that lights up copper in October and the border running along the ridge: Monte Lema is the autumn balcony of the Varese area.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Alpe Pradecolo, above Dumenza, and climb through the beeches past Alpe Pian di Runo to the summit of Lema, where we stop for lunch with Lake Maggiore on one side and Lake Lugano on the other. We loop back via the Arasio valley, Alpone di Curiglia and the little church of the Madonna della Guardia, always among the beeches.
From the top, on clear days, the view stretches from Monte Rosa to the Apennines; and the ridge path continues to Tamaro, one of the most famous traverses in Ticino.
Anyone who walks with some regularity: the climb is gentle and the paths are wide.
Come and see two lakes in autumn with the Guidders: a simple day full of colour.
Alpe Pradecolo is about two hours from Milan: motorway to Varese, then Luino, Dumenza and the road via Due Cossani and Agra to Pradecolo, narrow on the last bends. Car pooling in the outing's Telegram group.
