The experience

We set off with the Guidders from Albaredo per San Marco and climb through woods, hay meadows and summer pastures to Rifugio Alpe Piazza, in the Orobie Valtellinesi park. Then we carry on towards Monte Lago by way of Alpe Pedroria and Monte Culino, on mule tracks, pasture paths and steeper sections. The beauty is in how the landscape builds: you start in woodland, cross a working alpine world with its smell of grazing, and finish on an open summit.

10:00MOUNTAIN HUT
Alpe Piazza Mountain Hut
Situated at 1,855 metres, it is the perfect place to take a break, refill your water bottles when the service is available, and soak up the atmosphere of the Valtellina mountains.
11:30BIVOUAC
Legui Mountain Hut
From the mountain hut, we enter the high-altitude pastures, used during the summer season for alpine grazing and the production of Bitto cheese. We will pass the panoramic viewpoint with the Legüi bivouac shelter and the large alpine hut, before reaching a basin at the foot of the mountain.
13:00SUMMIT
Monte Lago
At 2,351 metres, the summit of Monte Lago offers one of the widest and most spectacular views in the area. On clear days, you can make out the Masino-Bregaglia range, Monte Disgrazia, the Lepontine Alps, and Lake Como, as well as the nearby Val Gerola and Val Tartano. Picnic lunch before setting off on the trail again.
