Mount Alben Winter Ascent (2,019m) – Ilaria Couloir
Winter ascent of Mount Alben
The winter normal route, straight to the top.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Cornalba, in the Val Serina, and climb towards the Baita Sura, then into the Canale Ilaria: with stable snow cover this is the most logical, continuous line for the winter ascent of Monte Alben, and effectively the normal route on snow. The gradients are sustained but regular, with a short steeper section at the start. It is a direct climb, technical in just the right measure, asking for good movement on snow and close attention to conditions.
5 reasons to come - the Canale Ilaria, the winter normal route on the Alben - a continuous line, straight to the summit - the Baita Sura along the climb - the summit of Monte Alben under snow - a climb that teaches you to read winter mountains
Who it suits A snow climb with sustained gradients: ice axe, crampons, experience of moving on snow and of assessing conditions are needed.
The Alben in winter is another mountain: come with the Guidders.
