Lago Delio and the Forcora: the ancient beech wood loop of Val Veddasca
Lago Delio: Veddasca beech woods
A lake hanging above Lake Maggiore, ancient beeches that turn into a red cathedral in October and the peaks of Val Veddasca all lined up: this is some of the finest autumn colour in the Varese area, and few people know it.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Lago Delio, above Maccagno, and walk into the beech wood up to the Forcora pass. We climb Monte Sirti, the most panoramic point of the loop, and drop to the Monterecchio pasture for lunch. On the way back we pass Monte Cadrigna and close the loop at the Forcora, before the last descent through the woods to the lake.
Lago Delio is a reservoir set high above the Verbano: from the dam you see Lake Maggiore below, as if through a porthole.
Anyone who walks regularly: the loop is long but has no difficult stretches, with short climbs and plenty of beech wood.
Come and discover Val Veddasca in autumn with the Guidders: a secret to keep between us.
Lago Delio is about two hours from Milan: motorway to Sesto Calende or Varese, then the Lake Maggiore shore road to Maccagno and the road up to the lake. Car pooling in the outing's Telegram group.
