Chestnut afternoon at the Sacro Monte of Varese: the Chapels Way, Monte Tre Croci and roasted chestnuts
Sacro Monte: chestnuts, chapels
Fourteen chapels in the woods, a medieval village clinging to the mountain and, at the end, the smell of roasted chestnuts: autumn at the Sacro Monte of Varese tastes of chestnuts.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from the First Chapel and climb the Chapels Way, a UNESCO site, up to the village of Santa Maria del Monte. From there we continue through the Campo dei Fiori woods to the Pizzelle pass and Monte Tre Croci, the balcony over the Varese lakes, where we stop for lunch. In the afternoon we return to the village for the roasted chestnuts and mulled wine of the festival on the Moses terrace, then walk calmly down past the chapels.
The chestnuts are roasted by the volunteers who light the village's Christmas lights every year: each paper cone helps keep them shining.
Everyone: the climb is steady but on a wide mule track and comfortable paths.
Come for a chestnut day with the Guidders: the sweetest autumn in the Varese area.
The First Chapel of the Sacro Monte of Varese is about an hour from Milan: motorway to Varese, then viale Aguggiari and the road to the Sacro Monte. By train, go to Varese and take bus C. Car pooling in the outing's Telegram group.
