The experience

We set off with the Guidders from La Rasega, at Saviore dell'Adamello, and enter a beautiful, austere valley: we climb past Rifugio Città di Lissone and Rifugio Baita Adamè, through woods, pastures and scree, up to the Porta di Buciaga, the pass marking the border between Lombardy and Trentino. The last stretch is hard work on rocky ground, and right there the view opens out hugely across the Adamello peaks. There is no postcard lake here: there is high mountain country, unfiltered.

HOW TO GET THERE

The hike starts in La Rasega, a hamlet of Saviore dell’Adamello, in the province of Brescia.

We arrive at Rifugio Città di Lissone for a coffee.

Rifugio Baita Adamè
We reach the last mountain hut in the Adamè Valley.

Porta Buciaga
Once we reach the pass, we can see all the traces left behind by the Alpini during the First World War: the remains of buildings, trenches, communication trenches, tunnels, and machine-gun emplacements. Until just a few years ago, large amounts of barbed wire and other metal debris were still visible. During the 1915–18 war, this area was also served by a military cableway used to transport supplies; evidence of its lower station can still be seen on the valley floor, near the trail through the Adamé Valley, beside a large glacial boulder.
