The experience

We set off with the Guidders from Fraciscio, above Campodolcino, and move straight into the alpine world of the Val Rabbiosa, wild and rarely walked. The path climbs through woods and pastures to Rifugio Chiavenna, a historic staging post, and beyond the hut the fine Piana dell'Angeloga opens out. From there we reach Lago Nero and the Passo Angeloga, with Pizzo Stella — the highest summit in the Valchiavenna — commanding everything.

HOW TO GET THERE
08:30PARKING
Starting from Fracisco
Leaving behind the Via delle Soste, we'll continue along the trail that leads to the Angeloga Alp through the wild Rabbiosa Valley.
10:00MOUNTAIN HUT
Chiavenna Refuge
We'll reach the Rifugio Chiavenna mountain hut to refuel before continuing on towards the stunning Lago Nero (Black Lake).
12:30LAKE
From Lake Nero to Angeloga Pass: A Stunning Mountain Trek
"The views from Black Lake are stunning, offering vistas of the Alpe Angeloga valley and Pizzo Stella. A short hike brings us to the summit cross at the Pass, where we can admire the beauty of Ballone Lake."
14:00PASS
Heading back from the pass to the Chaivenna Refuge
From the pass, we'll take a different trail back to the Chiavenna refuge, completing a loop: this path climbs to 2400m above Lake Caldera and then descends, winding along the Pizzo Peloso valley.
16:00RETURN
Back to the trailhead.
From Rifugio Chiavenna, we'll take the trail we hiked in on back to our vehicles.
