Alpe Zocca and Val Sissone: the larch loop from Chiareggio between the Gerli-Porro and Tartaglione huts
Alpe Zocca: the larch loop
A loop that turns to gold in autumn: the larches of Val Ventina, the high pastures of Alpe Zocca and the descent into Val Sissone, with Monte Disgrazia in the background.
The experience
We set off with the Guidders from Chiareggio, the last village in Valmalenco, and climb to Alpe Ventina, where a coffee awaits us at the Gerli-Porro hut. Then we enter the larch wood and climb to the peat bog and the huts of Alpe Zocca, the highest point of the loop, surrounded by the peaks at the head of the valley. We descend to Alpe Sentieri and to the Tartaglione hut, at the mouth of Val Sissone, for lunch; the way back passes the Forbicina pastures and Pian del Lupo.
At Alpe Zocca a ruined hut still bears the words «Museo Valmalenco», and just below lies a peat bog that was once a small lake.
Anyone who walks regularly: the climb to Alpe Zocca is steady, and on the way down we follow the waymarks carefully through the woods.
Come and close the larch loop with the Guidders: it is Valmalenco's truest autumn.
Chiareggio is at the head of Valmalenco, about two and a half hours from Milan: the SS36 to Colico, the Valtellina road to Sondrio, then the Valmalenco road to Chiesa and the climb to Chiareggio. Car pooling in the outing's Telegram group.
